My Top 5 Keto Side Dishes

Cold evenings for me means one thing. Comfort food. Pre-keto i’d devour bowls of mash, chunky chips or mountains of pasta with my mains. However that has of course changed since embracing keto! Now I enjoy my keto comforts* and regularly add them to meals to get that full ‘carb’ feeling without the carbs 😊.  So, if you’re on the keto wagon or just looking for some delicious and simple keto friendly sides then read on to my Top 5 Keto Side Dishes.

*If you don’t like cauliflower then this isn’t the post for you, next one…. maybe 🤣.

1 Creamy Cauliflower Mash 

Keto Mashed Cauliflower

The ultimate comfort food has to be Mashed Potatoes. Creamy, buttery, salty goodness that accompanies any main dish perfectly! With the colder evenings coming in fast you’re going to want a hearty and comforting side that’s low carb and tastes great!

You Need

  • 400g cauliflower
    1/3 cup sour cream
    4 tbsp heavy whipping cream
    1 stick of butter (65g)
    Pinch of Nutmeg
    Salt and white pepper to taste

Method

  1. ✔ Firstly, oven roast the cauliflower for 25 minutes at 200C or 400F.
  2. ✔ After the 25 minutes prick with a knife to ensure it is cooked.
  3. ✔ Next, using a blender or food processor,  pulse the cauliflower and other ingredients together. Be careful not to over-beat as the mixture will turn gummy.
  4. ✔ Serve hot next to your favourite meat. Mine’s a rib eye!

2.Keto Cheesy ‘Naan’ Bread

Keto Garlic BreadThis was one of the first keto sides that I ever made and continues to be a staple for us. If you have a hankering for a tasty side that is so close to the real thing then this is for you. It is soft and slightly chewy and soaks up ANYTHING you put on it. I serve mine with Bolognese!

You Need

  • 2 Large Eggs
    4oz Cream Cheese
    1 1/4cups or 150g Grated Mozzarella
    1/4 Cup or 30g Cheddar
    Cheese of choice for topping
    Garlic Butter
    Seasoning

Method

  1. ✔ Firstly, preheat the oven to 200C or 395F.
    ✔ Next, place all the cheeses in a large mixing bowl and microwave at 30 second intervals until melted soft.
    ✔ Then, remove from the microwave and stir to form a soft paste like consistency.
    ✔ Allow it cool slightly before adding in your eggs.Mix again and add in your seasoning.
    ✔ Microwave again for another two 30 second bursts to ensure it is fully mixed.
    ✔ Lastly, spread the mixture onto a greased baking sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes or until golden brown.
    ✔ Take out of the oven and brush with garlic butter and top with your favourite cheese. Place it back in the oven until cheese has melted.

3.Fried Cauliflower Rice

This dish perfectly mimics that delicious Chinese fried rice that you can’t help but love! It is super low in carbs and easy to make once you know how. I serve this with butter chicken or chicken korma or even alongside stews. You can also add meat to it to turn it into a main dish of its own.

You Need

  • 2 bags of frozen cauliflower rice
    1/2 cup frozen peas
    1 tbsp ghee
    2 large eggs
    Handful of spring onions
    A sprinkling of chicken stock cube granules
    1 tbsp soy sauce
    Sprinkle of chilli flakes
    Salt and pepper to taste

Method

✔ Firstly, microwave the cauliflower rice as per instructions (usually takes about 5 minutes).
✔ Next, allow the rice cool for a few minutes.
✔ Then, heat a frying pan and add the ghee, spring onions and peas, Fry for a couple of minutes.
✔ Beat the eggs and add these in, allow them to cook and then break it up with your spatula into little pieces.
✔ Add in the rice.
✔ Lastly, season with the chicken stock cube granules, chilli flakes and soy sauce.
Serve with your favourite curry dish!

4.Loaded Cauliflower Bake

Loaded Cauliflower Bake

This dish is another comfort classic and is perfect for keto. It is both high in fat (thanks cream ) and low in carbs and tastes sensational! I prefer to roast my cauliflower on it’s own first because I find  that the water comes out of it and seeps into the creamy mix if you roast it all together. Then, once the cauli is tender add in the creamy mix and bake. This is so good served with some roast beef and gravy for a Sunday lunch!

You Need

  • Bag Frozen Cauliflower
    1 Cup grated cheddar (or your favourite)
    Cup of Cream
    1 tsp Cumin
    1 tsp all purpose seasoning
    Salt and white pepper to taste

Method

  1. ✔ Firstly, place the bag of frozen cauliflower in a casserole dish and roast for 25 minutes at 200C or 400F. Check for tenderness after the 25 minutes.
    ✔ Then in a cup mix the cream and seasoning.
    ✔ Next, sprinkle the cheese over the cauliflower and then pour over the cream mixture..
    ✔ Finally bake for 15 minutes until golden and delicious.

5.Crushed Brussel Sprouts

Roasted Brussel Sprouts

Anyone who knows me or has ever sat beside me knows I LOVE Brussel sprouts 🤣. We’ve all been scarred by those horrendous watery green balls we have been given at one point or another but let me tell you, these are amazing! These are roasted in the oven and then slightly crushed and topped with a sprinkle of parmesan. They are the perfect keto side to anything, you just have to get onboard with the stinky bum it may or may not cause.

You Need

  • 500g frozen Brussel Sprouts
  • 1 Tsp Balsamic Vinegar
  • 1/4 cup butter (melted)
  • Salt and white pepper
  • Parmesan to sprinkle

Method

  1. ✔ Firstly, place the sprouts in a large casserole dish and bake for 30 minutes at 200C or 400F. (as with the cauliflower I bake these on their own so as to prevent water dulling the taste).
  2. ✔ Next, after the 30 minutes, crush slightly with a masher.
  3. ✔ Then, pour over the butter and balsamic.
  4. ✔ Sprinkle with the salt and pepper and toss together.
  5. ✔ Bake for another 15 minutes.
  6. ✔ Lastly, top with grated parmesan.

And so there you have My Top 5 Keto Side Dishes which I swear by.
