What On Earth Is Keto?
Hiiii there, so I am just back from my holidays in a gorgeous all-inclusive resort in Lanzarote. I’m covered in spots, fatter and feeling rather lazy about the gym but aside from that I had a wonderful time 🤣.
So, to cut a long story short, we met this lovely couple from the UK (HI RICHARD AND TRACEY 👋) who were very interested in Ketosis and how it could benefit them. It got me thinking, I bet there are thousands of Richards and Traceys out there who want to lose weight, heard about keto, but haven’t the foggiest about what exactly it is! I know I have already done a blog explaining what keto is for beginners but I thought I would do another one, a simpler one with just 3 basic questions. Give it a read if you’re looking to find out the age old question which has divided humanity and nations, What On Earth Is Keto 😂
1. What Exactly Is It? 😯
A lot of people still have no idea what keto is and that’s ok. Not everyone lives on Reddit or even uses the internet. How I like to explain it to people who haven’t done it is that it’s a modern version of the trusted ‘Atkins Diet’. I have never personally tried Atkins but I know a lot of celebs stuck to it like glue for decades to maintain their slender physique- think Jennifer Anniston in her ‘Friends’ era.
Atkins has 4 phases, protein and fat are fair game but carbs are strictly limited to between 20 and 25 grams (g) during the introductory phase. Phases 2 increases your intake of carbs to roughly 50g per day and you stay here until you are 15 pounds away from your goal weight. Phase 3 moves you to 80g of carbs per day and the last phase is maintenance- what you eat when you reach your goal weight.
Ketosis has no phases. You’ll cut your carbs down to about 5% of your daily intake. 75% of your remaining calories will come from fat and 20% from protein. As a result of eating this way for a few days, you will enter ketosis. In this state your liver begins to produce Ketones. Ketones allow you to burn your own body fat for energy YAY 😀
2. How Do I Do It? 😲
Like any major lifestyle change or diet, keto requires preparation, practice and patience.
You need to quickly learn what you can and can’t eat on keto and then make a basic food shopping list and meal prep plan for 30 days from it. Stick to it like glue and try to not have any sugar substitutes for these 30 days. Use a macro calculator to calculate exactly how many calories and macros you should be eating (try this one) most people stick to 5% carbs 75% fats and 20% of protein.
Sometimes you think you’re doing everything right and the weight just isn’t budging. Chances are you’re getting extra carbs in that you aren’t even aware are carbs! Read all the blogs, websites and books like you would do with any other topic you want to master. Eventually you will get it right!
I think this applies to all good things in life. If a diet was easy then everyone would be happy with themselves and diets would be obsolete. Keto is hard work but if you chip away at it persistently you will absolutely lose weight. It’s not a ‘quick fix’ and instead should be seen as a way of living.
What Can I Expect From It? 😬
✔ Weight loss – Is the primary motivation for starting keto and that’s because it is known to work. Expect to lose as much as 10 pounds of water weight in the first week and then 1-2 pounds a week thereafter. Although, remember that not everyone is the same.
✔ Increased Energy – Is one of the best reasons to do keto. I felt so sluggish all week on holiday because I was constantly eating and nibbling on carbs.
✔ Better overall health – Keto has been scientifically proven to improve your health. It reduces inflammation, cures epilepsy, increases energy levels and is also used to fight many issues such as cancer. If you haven’t already seen it, I strongly recommend you watch ‘The Magic Pill’ on Netflix as seeing is believing, so seriously give it a watch!
✔ Reduced Inflammation – You may not even know it yet but if you’re eating carbs then your body is inflamed. Once you quit the carbs and enter keto you will feel agile and better able to move.
✔ Reduced Cravings can be expected after the initial 30 days. Because you’re no longer eating sugar, you no longer crave sugar and junk food!
✔ Reduced Appetite – Eating fats keeps you fuller for longer. Eat a tub of Pringles and you will still be hungry for more. Eat a high fat, low carb snack and you won’t feel hungry in 20 minutes. Fat packs more calories per gram so you won’t need to constantly graze like you would do on any other diet.
My Thoughts 🐒
Keto is awesome and allows you to live your best life where you can eat good, hearty food and still look and feel your best. Even if you try it for 30 days I guarantee you will be hooked.
